What is Functional Capacity Evaluation?

A systematic evaluation to determine an individual’s ability to perform purposeful and
meaningful tasks in a safe and dependable manner. The FCE system used by Obair Associates
involves an in-depth, customised evaluation that combines both objective measures and
professional clinical judgment in order to determine an individual’s current capabilities.
Consideration is given to postural and mobility tolerances, upper limb function, manual
handling, fitness and endurance, as well as the effort provided and the reliability of pain and
disability reports.

A face-to-face objective, customised evaluation of the individual is carried out by an
Occupational Therapist experienced in the Matheson FCE System. The provision of a concise
report that details the individual’s functional capacity, recommendations that facilitate
retention/return to work, outlines the efficacy of current rehabilitation and advice on future
rehabilitation potential.
Location and geographical area
This service is provided in the United Kingdom and Ireland by a team of experienced
Occupational Therapists with the evaluation conducted at a suitable venue, local and
